Whilst there are lots of VWs badged TSi the 1.4 engine was changed numerous times before VW changed it for a 1.5TSi (which still had problems!) The 1.4 was changed so often because of design problems leading to expensive repairs at low miles. The chain cam ones being the most problematic.
If its the 1.4 tsi with ACT (cylinder de-activation) get that its engine code is EA211, but the 1.2tsi is not a bad choice. If its the 1.4tsi from around 2010-2014 run and dont touch it. I owned one of the 1.4tsi twin charged and while a nice engine its reliability was shocking (and mine didnt throw any massive bills).
I'd suggest a non-turbo Toyota or a Nissan. They may be "boring" vehicles, but they will likely be more reliable long-term than a rather technically-complex 1.4 TSI VW. If you want a VW, buy one with a diesel engine and a manual gearbox. I had a drive yesterday in a friends Tiguan 2.0 TDI.
